Cooking Classes with Mamma Agata

A day with Mamma Agata is a unique opportunity.  Pick your vegetables from her kitchen garden, learn how to make your own Limon cello, savor a delicious meal, and listen to Mamma’s stories about cooking for celebrities.

Either cooking for a large gathering or an impromptu poolside lunch, the approach was always the same. Traditional dishes with regional ingredients replaced formal ones and Mamma Agata always remembered her guest’s favorites. When Fred Astaire came to call, after a lunch of spaghetti alla puttanesca, he would waltz the hostess’s elderly mother around the courtyard. Humphrey Bogart was more reserved, and quietly ate his alici fritti while taking in the view. The pasta e fagioli was a dish exclusively reserved for Anita Eckberg, a gloriously tall woman with skin like milk. But, the favorite memory that Mamma Agata shares is that of Jacqueline Kennedy, who impressed her with “un eleganza molto simplice” an elegant simplicity that was unique only to her, enjoying mozzarella and tomato salad by the pool.

She worked until her middle twenties, when she married and had children. When her children became adults, she was sought after to prepare private dinners for politicians and writers such as Agnelli and Gore Vidal. In 1997, the idea of the cooking school was born, in order to share her many talents.

A cooking course with "Mamma Agata" is truly an unique experience. The cooking course is held in a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen on a terrace in Ravello. The town of Ravello is located high above the Amalfi Coast, with views that stretch to Capri and beyond. It is a town famous for its music and culture as well as gastronomic events.

Her extraordinary gift for home style cooking with regional ingredients comes across in everything she prepares. This is a "demonstration" cooking course where you will learn about the natural ingredients used, which are fresh picked the very same morning of each class. The Italian garden is located below the terrace, so each participant can also learn about growing the organic vegetables. On the same level is a small farm with free-range chickens, turkeys and rabbits.

Traditional dishes will include antipasti, pastas, breads, seasonal vegetable dishes as well as meat dishes. Last but not least are the cakes and marmalades! All the recipes  will be clearly demonstrated in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. After the class, participants share in the beautiful meal, and enjoy the local wines of the Amalfi region. In a land where limoncello is famous, Mamma Agata also prepares liquors made from tangerine, apricot and fennel.

The experience of the course will enable you to cook for your family, organize and dinners at home with a rustic Italian flavor. Above all, it will furnish the knowledge of natural Mediterranean diet which is one of the healthiest in the world.
